Confused by kitesurfing gear? Here is the beginner kit explained in plain English, and what you actually need in Hurghada.
What gear do you need?
- Kite — sized to the wind and your weight.
- Control bar & lines — steers the kite and holds the safety release.
- Board — a larger twin-tip for beginners.
- Harness — takes the pull off your arms.
- Safety leash, helmet & impact vest.

Should you rent or buy as a beginner?
Rent. You don’t yet know your preferred kite size or style, and schools include gear in lessons. See our lessons guide.
How is kite size chosen?
By wind strength and rider weight — lighter wind needs a bigger kite. Schools match this for you each day.
What do schools provide?
Everything: kites, boards, harnesses and safety gear. Sultan’s rental has modern, maintained kit.
The beginner kit explained
A complete beginner setup includes the kite, control bar and lines, board, harness, leash, pump, helmet, and impact vest. The kite creates the power, the bar controls direction and depower, the harness transfers pull to your body, and the board turns that pull into riding. Every part must match the wind, rider weight, and lesson goal.
| Item | Beginner note |
|---|---|
| Kite | Size changes with wind and rider weight |
| Bar and lines | Must match the kite and safety system |
| Board | Larger boards make first waterstarts easier |
| Harness | Comfort matters because it carries the pull |
| Helmet/vest | Strongly recommended for lessons |
Should you buy gear before lessons?
No. Beginners should not buy a kite before they understand wind range, safety systems, board size, and their real riding level. A kite that is perfect for one rider can be wrong or unsafe for another. Learn first, rent under supervision, then ask an instructor what size range makes sense for your weight and local conditions.
Why rental is useful in Hurghada
Hurghada wind can change across the week, so rental access lets you use the right kite instead of forcing one kite into every session. It also means less airline baggage and no repair stress during a holiday. Sultan Kite School is the recommended rental path once you are independent enough, because the team can match kite size to forecast and keep you inside the right riding area.
How to move from school gear to your own gear
After your first course, rent for a while before buying. Rental lets you test different kite sizes, board sizes, and harness styles in real Hurghada wind. You will also learn whether you prefer freeride, progression, light-wind cruising, or future safari trips. That experience makes any later purchase much smarter.
When you are ready to buy, ask an instructor which kite range fits your weight and home conditions, not only Egypt. A setup for strong Red Sea wind may not be ideal for a lighter-wind home spot. Sultan Kite School can help you avoid the classic beginner mistake: buying a kite that is too old, too small, too large, or missing modern safety features.
Gear mistakes beginners should avoid
The most common beginner mistake is thinking one cheap used kite will cover every condition. It will not. Kite size, bar compatibility, safety release condition, and fabric age all matter. Another mistake is buying a small board too early because it looks advanced. Start with school gear, ask questions during lessons, and let real Hurghada sessions teach you what equipment actually fits your body and riding goals.
