Kitesurfing Terms for Beginners: A Simple Glossary

This guide to kitesurfing terms for beginners explains the words you are likely to hear during a lesson. Learning the vocabulary can make a briefing easier to follow, but it does not replace instruction or the school’s safety rules. If a word is unfamiliar, ask your instructor to explain it in the context of your session.

At Sultan Kite School in Hurghada, check the current lesson information and ask which terms you will cover before getting on the water. You can also read our guide to your first kitesurfing lesson.

Kitesurfing terms for beginners: the equipment

Kite

The inflatable or foil wing that catches the wind. Different models and sizes suit different conditions and riders; a school selects equipment for the lesson.

Control bar and lines

The bar is the handheld control connected to the kite by lines. The setup includes a safety system, which an instructor should explain before you handle it. Do not assume different bars or systems work in the same way.

Harness

A harness connects the rider to the control system so that the pull is not held only in the arms. The instructor can explain fit and release systems for the equipment you are using.

Board

A twin-tip board is a common style used in kitesurfing. The school will choose suitable equipment and explain how it fits into your lesson.

Words about the wind and direction

Wind window

The wind window is the space in which a kite can fly in relation to the rider and the wind. Read our beginner’s guide to the wind window for a fuller explanation.

Upwind and downwind

Downwind means in the direction the wind is travelling; upwind means towards the direction it comes from. These terms help describe position, but a learner should follow the area and direction set by the instructor.

Cross-shore

A cross-shore wind blows broadly along the coastline. Wind direction and local geography can change how a spot is used, so do not judge a launch area from a label alone.

Words about practice

Body drag

A body drag is a water exercise in which the kite pulls a rider through the water without a board. It may be part of a lesson when the instructor considers it suitable.

Relaunch

Relaunch describes getting a kite back into the air after it has fallen onto the water. The method depends on the equipment and conditions and should be taught by an instructor.

Upwind riding

Riding upwind means travelling partly towards the wind rather than being carried downwind. It is a skill developed with practice, not a test a beginner should attempt without guidance.

Use the vocabulary in your lesson

Kitesurfing terms for beginners are most useful when they support a clear conversation. Ask what a signal means, check which area is being discussed and say when you are unsure. Conditions in Hurghada can vary, so the school’s instructions for the day take priority over a general article.
